Team Canada will take on Team Russia in a preliminary matchup today in Buffalo, New York. In this year’s tournament, the Canadians will try to win their 16th gold medal, while the Russians hope to win their first gold since 2003.
Last year, Team Canada grabbed the top seed of the tournament after going undefeated in the preliminary round. However, the Canadians settled for the silver medal as they fell 6-5 in overtime to Team U.S.A. in the championship.
Team Russia has not earned a medal since earning a Bronze in 2009. In the last tournament, the Russians dropped their quarterfinal game to Switzerland 3-2 in overtime. Their struggles continued to the fifth place game where they were defeated 4-3 by Finland.
